2022 Singers’ Programme
Next summer we’ll be bringing our training programmes back to Opera Holland Park - again we’ll be taking a group of singers, directors, conductors, designers and stage managers through the process of putting on a large-scale, professional production. Along the way they’ll pick up skills, knowledge, experience and exposure that’s almost impossible to come by elsewhere in the opera world.
We normally get hundreds of young singers applying for a place, so we’re opening applications now. And those applications will shape next year’s programme - every cohort is different and our training panel will choose a production for next year that will create the best opportunities for the people who apply. It will however be chosen from the following:
- Britten’s Albert Herring
- Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld
- Vaughan Williams’ Sir John in Love
- Verdi’s Falstaff
Performances will be in the week beginning 15 August 2022, with rehearsals starting in the week of 4 July.
You’ll need to submit an application, including three first round ‘audition’ videos. You’re applying for our summer season opportunities only.
Applications will close at midday on 6 January 2022 and you won’t be able to submit a late application. You’ll find out the result of your audition by 5 February 2022. The deadline is midday on 6 January, but try to get your application in as soon as possible. We’ll start auditioning right away, so an early application will only work in your favour. If you don’t manage to submit your application on or before 6 January then it will not be considered. We won’t accept late applications.
Around 120 applicants will be invited to a second round audition in-person. They’ll take place at the National Opera Studio in London on 19-20 and 26 February 2022.
The panel will offer places and make a final choice of opera based on the best fit for the most promising singers. There’s a chance that this opera might have gaps in the cast - if that happens then we might re-open applications for a specific role or ask for recommendations before more auditions.
We know that there’s no one single route into singing and our application process is designed to reflect that. Our programmes help to bridge the gap between training and the professional world, so we’re looking for those who stand a genuine chance of building an operatic career and will benefit most from the training. If you can demonstrate that to us then we’ll consider your application.
However, there are a few boxes that you must tick:
- You need to be 18 or older. There’s no upper age limit to taking part, but you should be at the start of your career.
- You’ll need to be having regular singing lessons and be able to confirm that your singing teacher supports your application.
You’ll need to be one of the following:
- A British citizen
- Currently studying at a higher education institution in the UK
- Currently resident in the UK and receiving regular singing lessons here
