Ain't I A Woman?

Calling on Black Female, Female Identifying, Trans and Afab Non-Binary Writers in Hackney and beyond! We need YOU!

“No black woman writer in this culture can write “too much”. Indeed, no woman writer can write “too much”…No woman has ever written enough.” ― bell hooks

The intersection of race and gender is often neglected – feminism is seen through the lens of white cis women, whilst the battle for racial equality is depicted as driven by black cis men. Ain’t I A Woman, a theatrical initiative coming to the Tower Theatre in Summer 2024, aims to champion a diverse range of black female, trans and non-binary voices and tell entertaining and provocative stories, reflecting their lives in contemporary Britain.

If you’re an emerging or aspiring writer, we would love to hear from you! We invite you to write a ‘theatrical piece’ for Ain’t I A Woman – this can be a monologue, duologue or a short play of no more than 20 pages which will be directed and performed by Tower members in Summer 2024.

Please contact Landé Belo for more information on the application and selection process.

Deadline for submissions is 30 November 2023.

“The function of art is to do more than tell it like it is – it’s to imagine what is possible.” ― bell hooks
