Costume: Men`s Workroom
The Production Costume Department produces costumes and accessories for new productions of opera and ballet, which are designed by independent costume designers. We offer work experience placements to individuals wishing to pursue a career in costume construction gaining experience in our Ladies, Men`s and Revival Workrooms, Hats and Jewellery Department, Dye Workshop and Thurrock Costume Workshop. The placement is based on the applicant`s particular area of interest and expertise in their chosen field. You can apply for placements in as many of the departments as possible, but as noted in the FAQ section, you can only undertake one First Stage placement at the Royal Opera House, so please consider this before accepting your placement.
You will be involved in the work of the Men`s Workroom and contribute to the construction of costumes for opera and/or ballet. During your placement you will apply and improve upon your existing knowledge and practical skills within this area, whilst gaining experience as a fully involved member of a professional workroom environment.
To be agreed with successful applicants (between January - March 2020)
8:30am - 5:30pm, Monday to Friday
Minimum entry requirements
- Aged 18+
- In the 2nd/3rd year of a Costume Construction Course (or with an equivalent level of training/experience)
Applicants should possess good hand and machine sewing skills and have a specific interest in men`s costume. Tailoring experience is beneficial as well as an interest in making period and/or ballet costume.
