Experience Opportunity

Creative Wakefield Advance

Advance empowers creatives to realise their full potential and take their work to the next level.

Advance is a support programme for creative and cultural practitioners, freelancers, organisations and SMEs based in Wakefield and the wider Yorkshire Humber region.

Brought to you by Creative England, Advance is delivered in partnership with Wakefield Council and funded by The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s Cultural Development Fund grant, which is administered by Arts Council England.

We are seeking for visual artists of all disciplines to benefit from a brand new, exciting fully- funded programme of professional development opportunities as part of the Creative Wakefield Advance programme.

Express interest in the Visual Arts Programme.

Our vision is to support and underpin the growth and development of freelance artists by providing a bespoke programme for visual artists in the Wakefield area. This programme will be tailored to cover essential aspects of being a professional artist. This will consist of interactive workshops and masterclasses which will include curation and portfolio development; budgeting and scaling up your projects; understanding IP and legal issues; and branding and marketing. Participants will receive 1:1 consultancy opportunities with experts to help you develop their work, goals and ambitions, as well as 6 hours of self-directed mentoring from an expert of their choosing.

This programme is aimed at early and emerging artists, providing access of expertise and guidance across a range of skills and topics, a professional peer group to continue learning off the page and individual consultations to offer creative development.

The Visual Arts programme is for freelancers working across the visual arts sub-sector, including ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, film making and architecture, illustrator, digital artist, combined arts, paper artist and printmaking.

Due to the venue where the programme is held places are limited and therefore priority will be given to Wakefield based applicants followed by the wider Yorkshire Humber region. Applications from individuals from beyond Wakefield will be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on how many places we have available and the strength of the application.

The deadline to express interest in the Visual Arts Programme is midday Friday 3rd December.

Applicants must either be a registered sole trader/freelancer, SME, CIC or Charity based in Wakefield or the wider Yorkshire Humber region.

In some cases, we’re also able to work with pre-starts but it’s best to submit an enquiry first before taking the time to complete an application form. The Advance team will then be in touch to find out more about the support you’re looking for.
