Volunteering opportunity for Applied Theatre students/alumni who are looking to gain experience in arts education, theatre facilitating and working with young people
The award winning Chain Reaction are looking for a brilliant volunteer to assist with the delivery of Act Up; an 11 week drama-based confidence and resilience-building programme for 13-16 year olds in a Newham school.
Chain Reaction are a London-based charity that's been using theatre and media to ignite personal and social change since 1994. We produce high-quality, emotionally engaging projects that transform the way people relate to themselves, their community and to wider society. We deliver workshop programmes and professional theatre in and out of schools, run youth theatres, social action groups and deliver multimedia health workshops and creative employability programmes.
Act Up is aimed at vulnerable young people whose challenging behaviour and attendance are disrupting their learning. Through use of an exciting and engaging theatre project we will mentor and support these young people, enabling them to attend school regularly so that they can fulfil their potential and feel inspired to exceed their expectations. Act Up will give 'at risk' young people the opportunity to get involved in positive activities to improve behaviour, boost educational engagement, and increase self-belief.
Delivery will take place in a school in the London Borough of Newham, working with around 15 13 to 16-year-olds per session. The weekly structured sessions will be 1.5 hours long, with 3 double sessions of 3 hours for rehearsals for a short celebratory performance to take place on the final week.
We are looking for a positive, energetic and inspiring volunteer that young people can relate to and understand. You need to be prepared to work with young people of all abilities from all backgrounds and be prepared to get involved in engaging and encouraging them. Your role will be to assist the delivery of each session alongside a highly skilled Workshop Leader and Facilitator.
This position would suit somebody aiming to work in arts education, theatre facilitating or applied theatre, looking for hands on experience of working with a vibrant, successful theatre company.
Must have previous experience of working with young people. The role will be subject to references and a DBS check. Passion for theatre and the arts in essential.
You must be available for the weekly sessions each Thursday 2pm - 3.30pm from 19 September to 5 December (except Thursday 31 October). Expenses will be paid.
If you'd like to become part of a team that really makes a difference, then please do get in touch. Email a cover letter to us on why you would be perfect for this opportunity, with 'Workshop Volunteer' in the subject header.
Chain Reaction is a equal opportunities employer and encourages applications from all sectors of the community.
