The Opera North Youth Orchestra (ONYO) forms part of the Opera North Youth Company. It serves to help dedicated young musicians transition from further or higher education into the professional world of music.

Drawing inspiration from the orchestral and opera work of Opera North, the Youth Orchestra prepares and performs two programmes of challenging repertoire each academic year. Rehearsing in the Orchestra of Opera North rehearsal studios, the Youth Orchestra provides opportunities to learn the musical and non-musical intricacies of working within a high-level orchestra whilst gaining further experience with orchestral and operatic repertoire and having fun!

Players travel from all over the North and Midlands to gain experience, make new friends and great music!

Hull Truck Theatre is a pioneering theatre with a bold Northern voice, known for producing and presenting inspiring, high-quality drama. From in-house productions to visiting performances, touring work and community projects, the theatre plays a vital role in Hull’s cultural life.

Based at Hull Truck Theatre, you’ll be joining a collaborative production team working closely with artists, visiting companies and creative professionals to bring live performances to life. This is a fantastic opportunity to start a career in technical theatre, gaining hands-on experience across lighting, sound, stage and production in a real working environment.

What you'll do:

• - Support the preparation and delivery of productions and events
• - Assist with setting up and taking down stage, sets and technical equipment
• - Work alongside technicians on lighting, sound and AV setup
• - Help with rigging, fit-ups, get-ins and get-outs
• - Support visiting companies and artists during performances and rehearsals
• - Assist with operating technical equipment during shows (where appropriate)
• - Help maintain and organise technical equipment, tools and workspaces
• - Support prop sourcing, set preparation and workshop activity
• - Assist with basic maintenance and servicing of equipment
• - Contribute to safe working practices, following health and safety guidelines
• - Support general production administration, including meetings and coordination

This is an 18-month apprenticeship, working up to 30 hours per week (including training time). You'll gain practical experience while working towards a recognised qualification, developing skills in areas such as:

• Technical theatre and stagecraft
• Lighting, sound and AV operations
• Event and production support
• Health and safety
• Working with artists and visiting companies

Guildhall School of Music & Drama’s Backstage Roadshow will take a series of FREE backstage skills workshops directly into UK state schools, introducing children and young people to the variety of creative pathways and career opportunities that exist within theatre, live events, television and film.

Led by industry professionals and designed by the School’s Production Arts staff, the Backstage Roadshow will take professional equipment into schools to provide a crucial insight into one of the UK’s fastest growing sectors and inspire young people to train and work in the creative industries.

Our team will also be offering full technical support to two primary school productions each year, bringing our lighting, sound, and stage management equipment, along with staff to help run your show.

How it works

The Backstage Roadshow will run for the Academic Years of 2024/25 and 2025/26, with support offered for one Primary School production in December and one in June or July.

What do we bring to your school?

• One lead facilitator and one workshop assistant to run each session. 
• Workshops designed for up to eight students per session, lasting 2-3 hours.
• For multiple workshops, one Project Manager to co-ordinate our staff.
• All equipment needed for each session.

Find out how a team of artists and teachers used arts-based learning to refresh their existing curriculum, whilst supporting pupil oracy, emotional literacy and wellbeing.

Key aims of the session:

• To use Drama and the Creative Arts to explore other areas of the curriculum such as STEM subjects.
• Introduce exercises to support class management
• To explore focus, self-regulation and reflection techniques.
