To help crack the ‘class ceiling’ and other barriers that so many young people encounter, Netflix and National Youth Theatre have launched IGNITE Your Creativity, a new programme that will spotlight the wide range of highly skilled behind the scenes careers in film, TV and theatre. It will also build the confidence, aspirations and networks of young people to show that a career in entertainment is possible regardless of their background.
IGNITE Your Creativity is currently recruiting young people aged 14-25 in Newport in South Wales. The South Wales element is being delivered with Urban Myth Films and their Newport-based film studios, the Sherman Theatre, National Youth Arts Wales and local community organisations and schools. This will be followed by activity in West Yorkshire and the North East later this year. 20 free community and school workshops will be delivered in each area, alongside set and theatre visits and free week-long courses led by industry professionals. If you're a school or community organisation in one of the above areas that would like to take part email the address below.
An advisory panel of industry leaders will support the programme including Oscar winning designer Eve Stewart, BAFTA Nominated producer Luti Fagbenle, TV Executives Johnny Capps and Chantal Rickards OBE, film producer Lauren Dark, award-winning lighting designer Jessica Hung Han Yun, filmmaker Matthew Penry-Davey, and lighting designer Rob Halliday.
Anne Mensah, VP UK Content, Netflix said: "Our industry has a pronounced absence of socio-economic diversity partly because it’s freelance, which makes it tough for those from less privileged backgrounds to gain a foothold. IGNITE Your Creativity has been designed to raise awareness and aspirations, and build confidence and networks so that young people don’t need to have existing industry connections, live in a big city or have a degree for a career in TV and film.”
Paul Roseby, CEO and Artistic Director of National Youth Theatre, said: “Theatre is one of the great pipelines to TV and Film but sadly the pipeline of opportunity for so many young people has been broken for so long. Certain parts of the creative industries are growing, but ironically so is the skills gap in production talent. This partnership will help redress the imbalance and we’re thrilled to be pioneering it with our friends at Netflix.”
We're very grateful to Netflix for their support of IGNITE Your Creativity.
We'd like to thank Urban Myth Films for their support in South Wales.
