Theatrical Media Make-Up is an exciting career for people who are creative and have a passion for hair and beauty in the performance and media industries. It is a competitive career but with the right skills, experience and hard work you can open up a world of opportunities.

On this course you'll be introduced to the artistry of hair, make-up and special effects make-up for the stage. Working closely with our Performing Arts department and through external work experience you will develop and refine your creative skills and build your portfolio of work.

Only available to those who are joining at aged 16, this course is a stepping stone to a backstage career in the theatre and related industries.

You will study a wide range of skills in set design, costume, lighting and sound along with stage and production management. This course will give you the foundation you need to pursue a career in the performing arts industries. Students typically progress into apprenticeships, Higher Education or direct entry into the profession.

The BRIT School offers extensive theatre facilities, giving you the chance to learn and develop a wide range of practical skills. The course is staffed by experienced theatre professionals and much of the learning is delivered through work on fully realised productions. The experience you will gain on this course will prepare you for a career in Production Arts and production design. At the end of the two year course you will achieve a UAL, Level 3 Extended Diploma in Production Arts, equivalent to three A levels.

Carpenters and joiners work on creating and installing a huge variety of features such as roofs, floors, windows and staircases, supporting new constructions, refurbishments and restoration projects alike. Our Level 1 carpentry course will introduce you to everything from using handsaws, planes, chisels and other essential tools to selecting woodworking resources and how to mark and produce woodworking joints. You will also learn key construction topics such as health and safety, modern sustainable construction methods and green technology, alongside developing your English, maths and other transferable skills to prepare you for the workplace.

Your carpentry training will be hands-on, studying in our cutting-edge Sustainable Construction Centre on campus, ensuring you have the practical skills to succeed. Once you have completed our carpentry and joinery course, you will have opportunities to progress onto further study, apprenticeships and careers in the industry.

Cost: Free for students aged 16 to 18. Students aged 19 and older may have to pay tuition fees depending on their employment status, income etc.

The Technical Theatre course will give you the opportunity to gain the qualifications, skills and experience to progress in the Performing Arts Industry or in any industry you wish to go on to study after the two years.

The Technical Theatre qualification offers a diverse range of subjects giving you an insight into the industry enabling you to develop analytical, creative production and technical skills. Some of the areas covered within the course include lighting, sound, costume, set construction and Stage Management.

This course provides a professional training in a theatre, with state-of-the-art facilities. The Miskin is run by experienced industry professionals.

All assignments are modelled on professional practice, learners will also have the opportunity to participate in work experience.

UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing & Production Arts (Technical Theatre)

The Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Make-up Artistry provides you with specialist practical skills and knowledge which will equip you to seek employment or progression within the theatrical and media make-up industry.

This qualification is aimed at you if you are looking to work in the theatrical and media make-up industry. This qualification covers a very wide range of skills and knowledge required for working in the Theatrical and Media Make-up industry. Achievement of this qualification demonstrates to an employer that you have the necessary advanced technical skills to be employed as a Theatrical and Media Make-up Artist. You are likely to choose this qualification if you want to cover all of the advanced skills and knowledge needed to work as a Theatrical and Media Make-up artist. The areas covered in this qualification will give you a wider range of advanced techniques and also further progression or employment opportunities.

This qualification provides students with an opportunity to explore and refine their individual practical skills, focusing on progressing either into higher-level education, such as Drama School or directly into employment. The qualification is suitable for students who are passionate and dedicated to achieving their goal of working in the Performing Arts. The stimulating and demanding qualification structure allows students to develop and test their creativity, whilst providing a supportive transition onwards.

Applicants must have a level 3 qualification (A level, BTEC or UAL) in a relevant creative or performance-based subject and a grade 4 in English Language. Alternatively, applicants may be accepted based on relevant industry experience. There will be an audition process which could involve monologues, group workshops and movement depending on the chosen specialism.

Level 2 introduces the learner to carpentry and joinery skills. It allows candidates to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in carpentry or joinery.

On successful completion of the course students can progress on to a level 3 (T-Level) qualification in this subject, T-Level in Design, Surveying and Architecture or into employment in a related area.

This is a dynamic and versatile course that will enable you to become a well-rounded creative art student and offers you the opportunity to explore and develop your artistic practice across a broad range of Art and Design specialisms. Units studied have a strong emphasis on experimentation and exploration allowing them to be tailored to your individual specialist practice.

You will have access to a range of facilities including studio spaces, printmaking workshops, textiles workshops, photography studios and state of the art equipment. To help you apply your skills you will be encouraged where possible to engage with the industry through competitions, live briefs, community work and employer engagement. Tutors are experienced and still work within the industry as artists and designers.

You will also have the opportunity to go on art based trips to places such as Liverpool, London and Berlin.

In year 1 you will have the opportunity to explore a diverse range of materials, techniques and processes to enable you to build a strong set of skills and knowledge across the areas.

In year 2 you will focus more on your chosen specialist area to create a strong portfolio of work accumulating in and end of year exhibition that is open to the public. During the course you will be guided through your progression options through talks, university visits and meeting ex-students. You will be supported through your UCAS application by our experienced team.
