On the FdA Professional and Commercial Dance, you'll have the opportunity to gain core skills in ballet, jazz, contemporary and commercial dance, and develop the knowledge and practical experience needed for employment in a variety of exciting and demanding professions in the performing arts industry.
Delivered by Shockout Arts, our 2-year FdA Professional and Commercial Dance course supports you in acquiring and developing essential technical, artistic and theoretical competence through professional training to an intermediate/level 5 standard. If you're an aspiring dance artist, completing this 2-year foundation degree provides the platform to either begin your professional career or undertake a final year at the advanced level to gain a level 6 qualification. If you wish to continue your training at the level 6 BA (Hons) level with Shockout Arts, your application will be considered through assessment and interview.
You'll be based at Shockout Arts in Manchester, studying and training in their purpose-built, high-specification dance studios that are equal to professional industry standards. Alongside your intensive practical dance training, you'll have regular performance opportunities to help you develop a diverse range of performance and production skills.
In addition to exploring the core techniques, you'll be encouraged to build your skills in acting and singing, ready to take advantage of employment opportunities in musical theatre performance. You'll also be guided to develop a knowledge and understanding of the historical, cultural, societal and political factors that influence UK and international dance practice.
The teaching staff at Shockout Arts are professional practitioners and choreographers. This two-year Foundation Degree programme has been designed to enable a multidisciplinary study of Events Management at a higher level. You will gain a theoretical and practical understanding of the Events Industry. The modules on this course will provide you with the skills and experience necessary for successful employment through a combination of theoretical study and practical tasks.
This programme will allow you to enhance your current knowledge and skills in order to develop as an informed events specialist. Your learning will include lectures, seminars, guest speakers, conferences, practical tasks at events, trips, peer-group learning and independent study. The programme allows you to study modules such as:

- Events and Hospitality Planning

- Human Resource Management
Your academic and course tutor will work with you throughout the duration of your programme, supporting your development and tracking your academic progress to ensure that you achieve your best.
The foundation course is aimed primarily at school leavers who are interested in preparing themselves for three-year actor training at conservatoire level, either at The Lir or a similar academy.
With an additional focus on broadening students’ reading and understanding of plays and theatre history, it also prepares students for broader drama degrees and related areas of study and work. The course is taught by a committed team of teachers, including many of The Lir’s core acting tutors and teachers from our Master of Fine Art programmes.The personal development of the foundation course students is enhanced by regular individual tutorials with The Foundation Course Director, a dedicated member of staff who supervises all aspects of the programme.
The course also encourages students to develop their own individual creativity with a focus on collaboration, improvisation and lateral thinking.
This course is an NFQ Level 7 Diploma (60 credits)
The Foundation Diploma in Acting and Theatre at The Lir Academy is not part of the CAO point’s race. Students are expected to have achieved the minimum matriculation requirements for Trinity College Dublin courses, however, exceptions may be made based on the demonstration of exceptional natural talent at auditions.
READ College’s full-time, vocational Foundation Course in Musical Theatre is now entering its 13th year, and graduate destinations have included Arts Ed, Mountview, Urdang, Bird, Laine, Central, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and many more. As a registered charity, we support students from under-represented and disadvantaged backgrounds with bursary funding towards tuition fees through our Access to The Arts ™ programme.
Students benefit from at least 27 hours of contact time per week, and study the full range of skills required in Musical Theatre under the guidance of leading industry tutors. Dance styles taught include ballet, jazz, commercial, tap and contemporary. Acting classes include improv, classical theatre, audition repertoire and physical theatre, and our singing training is made up of weekly one-to-one classes, ensemble singing, music theory and vocal tech. Students also benefit from regular masterclasses with guest tutors from all of the major degree-level courses, to prepare them for auditions.
Our Foundation students graduate with the Level 4 ATCL Diploma in Performing, awarded by Trinity College London.
Over 98% of our Musical Theatre graduates have been offered places at leading degree-level courses since the college opened, and our alumni can now be found working throughout the industry. Courses run from September to July, and applications are now open for our 2021 intake. Open days take place throughout the year, and we also run regular taster courses in the school holidays.

The Foundation Degree in Circus Arts is a two-year course which aims to develop a broad range of the skills required as a professional circus artist
The Foundation Degree is intense in order to sustain technical and creative progression, with an equal focus on artistic creativity and collaboration. The focus is on the continuous assessment of each student’s individual progress, as well as performance related assessment both as an individual and as part of an ensemble. Students’ analytical and critical skills are also assessed through research presentations, essays and other assignment projects.
The degree is delivered at the National Centre for Circus Arts and is awarded by the University of Kent. Students must complete and pass all modules in both years of the course in order to obtain the qualification, and progress on the BA (Hons) Degree. Entry on to the BA (Hons) is at the discretion of the Higher Education delivery team.
Course content includes: aerial disciplines, acrobatic disciplines, juggling and manipulation, ball, club and ring juggling.

For example, in our workshops you’ll train alongside Design for Performance and Stage Management students, collaborating with them to present innovative and inspiring projects at RWCMD and on your placement.
- Your practical work will be prominent on the stages of our theatre spaces for RWCMD’s drama, opera and musical theatre productions.
- You don’t need previous construction experience to get a place on the course: we’re looking for passionate, inventive, creative students who are open to being challenged and trying new things.
On successful completion of the Foundation Degree, you have the option to undertake an additional year of study specialising in scenic construction to be eligible for the BA (Hons) Design for Performance.
