Acoustics and music technology sit at the exciting crossroads between science and the arts. In this rewarding programme you will combine aspects of both worlds to gain insight into the science of sound, and progress towards further research or a career in acoustics and music related technology.

What you will study
The MSc/Dip in Acoustics and Music Technology is led by the Reid School of Music. Taking the science of sound as your focus, you’ll work in a cross-disciplinary environment, using theoretical and experimental work to explore the musical, technical and multimedia applications of acoustics and audio technology. You’ll have access to a comprehensive suite of facilities – from up-to-date recording studios and sound desks, to an anechoic chamber, reverberation room and historic concert halls, with availability subject to COVID-19 restrictions.

This is a unique degree programme, combining both technical and creative subjects. You will gain a solid platform in the essential technical aspects of acoustics, signal processing and computer programming for audio, while at the same time have the opportunity to undertake more artistically creative study in the fields of music and sound design. It is also possible to tailor your course choices to take in subjects in mathematics, informatics, physics, electronic engineering and speech recognition and synthesis technologies, for a more technical overall slant. Whatever path you choose to take, you will have a unique opportunity to engage with and learn from world-class academics in the fields of acoustics, music and audio technology, in an environment of active, international-quality research.

Access to The Arts ™ is a national outreach and funding programme, run by READ College (a registered charity). Since the organisation was founded back in 2008, we have always whole-heartedly believed that the Performing Arts should be open to anyone who has the passion and drive to forge a career in the industry. All too often, however, people don’t see themselves reflected on stage and on screen, don’t know how to access training for a professional career, or simply cannot afford to train. That’s where Access to The Arts ™ comes in.

All of our outreach work is free to access and is delivered across the UK in communities identified as being under-represented or disadvantaged, and who can most benefit from our work. Our Widening Participation & Outreach Co-Ordinator, Amelia Stevenson, is an alumna of READ with a successful and creative career under her belt and delivers practical skills workshops, Q&A clinics and careers advice sessions in order to support people into further training. As a registered charity, there is no charge to any individual or organisation wishing to benefit from our outreach programme, and we welcome contact from schools, colleges, youth and community groups who would like to find out more about how we can help them and their young people. Workshops and courses range from a few hours to a few days depending upon the project, and our aim is to really encourage and support young people at the grass roots level to help them take the first steps into vocational training and to become artists in their own right.

Access to The Arts ™ also provides bursaries to overcome barriers to training for those who have successfully auditioned for full-time places at READ College’s Sixth Form and Foundation courses. Bursaries for READ are awarded on a means-tested basis, and are generated from charitable events, grants and donations. If you, your company, or anyone you know is able to support our work then you can make one-off or regular donations via our website.

The Year will cover the core acting principles and the craft of the actor, from a range of different practitioners and directors perspectives, both through theatre and screen practice. Students will cover, voice, movement, characterisation, text work, improvisation and impulse, presence, rehearsal process through to performance and audition technique, industry preparation.

We believe in an integrated and holistic approach to actor training, and that an actor never really concludes their learning, its is simply a continuous cycle of research, doing and reflection from workshop to workshop, job to job and year to year... So the course is content fluid and reflects a year cycle of doing, reflecting and learning suitable for all backgrounds and experiences.

To enable this we have articulated six key core elements of the actors craft or we like to refer to as the six DNA strands that make up the actor. These strands will be the focal point of the training and are also the same strands we work on in 'The Actor's Gym' with our professional actor network.
