Develop and hone your writing skills, and explore the important relationships between film and theatre, in our BA Creative Writing and Film & Theatre course.

Taught jointly by the Department of English Literature and the Department of Film, Theatre and Television, this multi-faceted course will:

- develop your creative writing in a small-group environment
- explore a variety of literary, dramatic and film texts
- provide practical and theoretical approaches to film and theatre.

Creative writing, film and theatre complement each other perfectly. Developing characters and narratives in your creative writing, and working to improve and refine them, will make you a better writer. This will enhance your ability to create compelling characters and narratives in your filmmaking and theatre work.

The Creative Writing: Writing the City MA is the only Creative Writing MA course to focus entirely on the city of London. It will allow you to explore the city as subject matter from a range of perspectives and across all genres. It will also give you a theoretical and practical platform from which to develop your understanding, and become part of the London writing scene.

Taught by professional writers and researchers, our course offers plenty of opportunities to network with other writers, agents, TV producers and performance poets. As part of the MA, you'll be part of the team managing the Wells Street Journal, our student-led in-house magazine. You'll be based in the University's headquarters building at 309 Regent Street, which means you'll be writing about the city in the heart of London, with ready access to the capital's excellent academic, social and cultural opportunities, including the vibrant West End theatre scene.

The course is a combination of theory, analysis and practical application, giving you the opportunity to study a wide range of rich and stimulating media products including television, advertising, print and online media

Your investigation of these texts provides opportunities for detailed analysis of how the media communicate meanings in a variety of forms. You will apply a variety of theoretical approaches, along with a knowledge and understanding of media language in your investigation of how texts position audiences to respond in particular ways.

This course is designed to encourage, nurture and promote the individual voice of the developing writer.

The theatrical landscape is constantly being moulded by theatre makers who are presenting original works or reimagining classics. Critical to this process is new writings and adaptations. On the Master in Fine Art degree in Playwriting at The Lir Academy, we offer every student the opportunity to develop and hone their unique writing skill so that each play written is the best it can be.

Modules in contemporary theatre practice, dramaturgy and workshops in writing, are supplemented with one-to-one training and development, so that each individual student has quality time with playwrights, directors and designers. The training culminates with the students writing a full-length play whilst being mentored by the Head of Playwriting, Graham Whybrow. Graham brings a wealth of experience to this role, including twelve years as Literary Manager of the Royal Court Theatre.

Excerpts of these final works are shared in a public event with an invited audience of industry professionals.

The course is designed to complement the existing Master in Fine Theatre Directing and the Master in Fine Art Stage Design including Lighting Design, Costume Design and Set Design. Students on all three programmes will work together in collaboration, developing a shared understanding of contemporary theatre practice and a collective appreciation of the dedication and commitment required to make innovative performances happen.

On completion of this postgraduate degree, you will qualify and graduate from Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin.
