You will tour the three main workrooms of ROH that make and revive their costume stock for Ballet and Opera, and see the many other different workshops that all contribute to building the characters that appear on the stage- wigs, hats, jewellery, shoes and the dye shop- as well as buying and logistics, which are key to the whole operation. Learn about the different career pathways you could take in a costume department and the skills needed to do them.

Costuming Shadow is a participatory workshop inviting fluid, playful expression. Through collective material exploration participants create costumes based on the shapes of their shadows and the characters they inspire. This is a gentle and relaxed workshop with lots of sensory input.

Find out the many roles involved in getting a theatre set from a scale model and plans on the drawing board and in CAD, to the opening night. You will follow the journey of a set from a designer’s ideas in the model and planning room to the Royal Opera House’s backstage build area, where lorry loads of set are dropped off after construction at our workshops in Purfleet, Essex. Then see how their huge main stage works to change a whole production twice a day!
