You will learn relevant practical theory, whether from scratch or building upon knowledge you already have to support your chosen musical pathway. There is a choice between a performance and a production pathway which can be opted for in term two.
Year two builds upon the foundation of year one, encouraging independence and confidence whilst managing the StrodeLive production and performance team. Events management and a major project - developing and marketing your own music to perform and release; based upon several continually growing projects as a team, ensemble or soloist. You will still be developing as an all-round musician, producer or engineer and all the crossovers in between.
Our two-year MFA gives you the opportunity to launch your career as a director with a full run in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival
This course has been launched to extend a great opportunity for trainee directors.
Working in the heart of the festival city, there will be time to work with actors on all years of the BA Acting & English and the BA Acting for Stage & Screen courses.
You'll be working on contemporary and classic texts and alongside trainee playwrights to create new work.
You'll have dedicated industry-recognised mentors providing support throughout your training time and you’ll be studying in one of the most culturally-vibrant cities in the world.
The two-year duration gives you time to truly develop skills and creativity, and also allows you to network and build relationships with actors and writers who can make an impact on your career after you graduate.
Develop your talent as a musician and performer through the practical and theoretical study of popular music.
On this very practically based programme, you will also have the opportunity to develop extremely useful skills such as recording techniques, live PA mixing, songwriting and arranging – all essential for working in the music industry.
Our course provides a unique opportunity for you to excel in performance while developing a critical mind and becoming an intelligent, multi-skilled musician.
Popular musicians learn in different ways so the course uses accelerated learning techniques to ensure that all students progress in areas of musicianship, making clear links between; performance, context, theory and professional practice. The Department is committed to this holistic method of study, helping you to understand the value in what you are learning as you become confident, creative musicians. As a Department, we also have excellent links with industry professionals and visiting professors.
In the 2020 NSS, Popular Music Performance received 100% for teaching on the course and academic support, and 100% of students agreed that staff had made the course interesting.
We pride ourselves on the quality of support we offer, and have a range of support packages to help support students during their time at University.
